WHAT IS GROUNDING?
Grounding is bringing the body in direct and uninterrupted contact with the Earth. In order to ground, the skin needs to touch soil, sand, water, or a conductive surface that is in contact with the Earth.
WHY TRY GROUNDING?
Grounding is a really simple thing. Grounding means being connected to the Earth, literally touching it. It doesn’t cost anything; it’s free! You have already Grounded many times in your life. Any time you have walked barefoot in the grass or on the beach you were absorbing the Earth’s healing energy through your feet. This energy is subtle so you probably didn’t notice much when walking barefoot. But subtle is important!
Our bodies know this energy because we evolved touching the Earth. Man used to walk barefoot all the time and slept right on the ground. Being connected to the Earth’s energy helps bring us back to our natural electrical state which is vital to our health as we are electrical beings! Connecting to this energy and regaining balance is one of the keys to fostering optimum health.
The Earth is quite possibly the biggest “anti-oxidant”; and when we touch it, our bodies are flooded with electrons which our bodies use to counteract free radicals or inflammation in the body. Grounding immediately equalizes your body to the same energy level as the Earth. This results in synchronizing your internal biological clocks, hormonal cycles, and physiological rhythms. From a scientific perspective, the idea is that the Earth has a mild negative charge to it. Over time, especially in our modern-day lives of appliances and technologies, our bodies build up a positive charge (that can led to health problems). Direct contact with the Earth can even out this positive charge, and return the body to a neutral state.

While scientific studies are limited, a growing body of emerging research is discovering numerous health benefits to grounding, there is also a huge body of anecdotal evidence;

HOW TO TRY GROUNDING
In order to ground, your skin either needs to be in touch with the Earth directly, or a conductive surface that is in contact with the Earth.
We all ground ourselves naturally when we walk barefoot in the grass, sand or dirt (like our bodies, these are conductive surfaces and the Earth’s energy flows through them and into us!) We are also grounded as we swim in natural bodies of water like the sea or lakes.
(Spending time barefoot at the beach is ideal as both the sand and the ocean water are naturally conductive materials and both help to ground the body and remove excess positive electrons!)
*To note: wood, asphalt and vinyl are not conductive. Rubber is also not conductive (our shoes actually prevent us from absorbing the Earth’s subtle energy).
To ground naturally:
- Walk outside barefoot when you can – grass, sand, rock, dirt will conduct the Earth’s electromagnetic field
- When possible, swim in a natural body of water (lakes, ocean)
Since we mostly live indoors and wear rubber-soled shoes that prevent us from absorbing the Earth’s subtle energy, it is theoretically possible that we can go years without grounding! Some experts wonder if this dis-connect and lack of grounding is contributing to the many health problems we face today.
There are now many options available for grounding indoors! You can chose from many different Earthing/ Grounding products (mats, bands, patches, sheets etc.) that connect to the ground port of a grounded outlet with a simple cord. The ground wire of the outlet connects you to the Earth’s energy, and the Earth’s natural electrons flow right up through the wire and onto your mat or grounding product of choice! (Most products come with an outlet tester so you can check that the outlet is configured correctly).

GROUNDING AND INFLAMMATION
In recent years, inflammation has been recognized as the leading trigger of chronic pain and most major health disorders (including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s, and cancer).
It seems our bodies are on fire! Earthing appears to extinguish the flames through the transfer of negatively-charged electrons from the surface of the Earth into the body where they neutralize positively-charged destructive free radicals involved in chronic inflammation.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH GROUNDING
I ground myself often! When I am outside I take my shoes off – I picnic barefoot, walk barefoot in the grass and love swimming in the ocean and lakes. I also use grounding technology at home – a grounding sheet on my bed (grounding during sleep is great as this is the body’s peak repair time) and a grounding pad downstairs to sit on while I watch TV or read!
I also have a grounding mat that is portable for travel or if I’m working in the office (I place it under my arms or feet while I work at the computer (this reduces the amount of EMF’s I am exposed to).
From what I’ve read, reactions to grounding can vary. Some people will notice a difference immediately, others may notice changes in a few days or weeks, others won’t feel any changes but may have measured improvements in cortisol levels! It seems that the more inflammation a person has, the more noticeable the difference when incorporating grounding.
I had an inflammatory skin condition (guttate psoriasis) and could noticeably see the difference before and after grounding. When grounding naturally or using grounding products, the angry red patches on my skin and the unbearable itchiness would reduce significantly within 10-20 minutes. The healing effects of grounding were so visible and tangible, I was convinced first time and never looked back!
WHEN NOT TO TRY GROUNDING
One grounding caution is that in very rare cases there is too much ground current which could cause more harm than good. This is mostly problematic in really large cities and where over wires run in the ground. In most cases (where there isn’t a strong ground current) it is extremely beneficial to be outside spending some time barefoot connecting with the Earth!
HOW TO TRACK GROUNDING RESULTS
Spending time barefoot has many benefits – there isn’t really a downside! If you are concerned about the rare case of too much ground current, try tracking your results. Spend more time outside barefoot or use a grounding product indoors while monitoring the effects.You can use a sleep app to track sleep patterns and see if sleep improves with grounding. You can also keep track of things like joint pain, headaches etc. and watch to see if those things improve over time. If it helps, keep doing it! 🙂
